Twisters: A Visually Stunning but Substantially Lacking Blockbuster
Twisters, the latest film from director Lee Isaac Chung, is an adrenaline-fueled ride that promises to deliver on its titular premise. With its impressive visual effects and stunning action sequences, it’s clear that the film’s creators have spared no expense in bringing the fury of twisters to life on the big screen. But despite its technical prowess, Twisters ultimately falls flat due to a lack of substance and poorly developed characters.
Storm chasers in action
The film follows Kate Cooper, a student meteorologist played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, as she joins a group of storm chasers known as Storm Pro. Alongside her is Tyler Owens, a charismatic and social-media-savvy storm chaser played by Glen Powell. As they navigate the treacherous world of tornadoes, they find themselves in a series of heart-pumping sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Despite the thrills, however, Twisters struggles to find its footing. The script, penned by Mark L. Smith, fails to deliver on its promises, leaving characters feeling paper-thin and underdeveloped. The romantic potential between Kate and Tyler is hinted at but never fully explored, making their relationship feel like an afterthought.
Tornado destruction
One of the few bright spots in Twisters is its stunning visual effects. A sequence in which a rodeo arena is torn apart by a tornado is truly breathtaking, and the film’s use of practical effects adds a level of realism to the action sequences. But even these impressive set pieces can’t make up for the film’s lack of substance.

Glen Powell shines as Tyler Owens, bringing a level of charm and charisma to the role that is sorely needed. Daisy Edgar-Jones also delivers a solid performance as Kate Cooper, though she is given little to work with in terms of character development.
Glen Powell as Tyler Owens
Ultimately, Twisters feels like a wasted opportunity. With its impressive visuals and thrilling action sequences, it could have been a truly memorable film. Instead, it’s a shallow blockbuster that fails to deliver on its promises.
