Ti West’s MaXXXine: A Neon-Drenched Horror Flick That Will Leave You Breathless
The latest installment in Ti West’s horror trilogy, MaXXXine, has been dividing critics, but our reviewer was thoroughly impressed. Here’s why.
A nostalgic trip back to the 80s
In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks the starlets of Hollywood, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past.
The film’s visual style is a phenomenal 80s aesthetic, with heavy grain and neon lights that will transport any older fan back to a place of pure nostalgia. The studio backlots and run-down video store add to the 80s Hollywood vibe, making it a must-see for any self-respecting movie fan.
Mia Goth shines as Maxine Minx, bringing a bit of pathos and struggle to the character. Her fantastic monologue is a highlight of the film, eclipsing her prior work. Kevin Bacon is an absolute scene stealer as Private Investigator John Labat, bringing a slimy and detestable side to his character.
The kills in MaXXXine are not overly abundant, but they make their presence known. From crushed testicles to a completely crushed car, this is not for the squishily squeamish types. The practical effects are a breath of fresh air, satiating even the most rabid of gorehounds.

Ti West’s script is the best-written of the entire trilogy, finally providing us with fleshed-out human beings. Even Moses Sumney’s Leon feels more lived in than any of the porn star cast of X.
While some may be upset with the direction the film takes in the third act, it’s been perfectly set up by the ending of X. The “evil masked by good” story is recreated in a believable way, making it a great character piece for Goth.
Kevin Bacon is an absolute scene stealer
In conclusion, MaXXXine is a film that feels of the era and is a great character piece for Goth. With some of the best gore gags of the year, it’s a must-see for horror fans.
