Catching Waves and Dodging Bullets: Sons of Summer Review

As a self-proclaimed non-sportsman, I’ve always found myself perplexed by the world of surfing. The thrill, the skill, the… physics of it all – it’s a mystery that continues to elude me. However, when a film like Sons of Summer comes along, I’m more than happy to immerse myself in the sun-kissed world of surfers and outlaws.

Sons of Summer follows the story of four friends on a road trip to honour their late father, a surfing legend. But when one of them gets entangled with a stolen drug stash, their carefree journey takes a dark and unexpected turn.

What drew me to Sons of Summer was its unique blend of surfing action and gritty crime drama. The film boasts stunning visuals of surfing on Australia’s Gold Coast, which will undoubtedly keep surfing aficionados on the edge of their seats. The sequences are breathtaking, and I found myself mesmerized by the sheer power and beauty of the ocean.

The cast, which includes Temuera Morrison, Isabel Lucas, and Joe Davidson, delivers solid performances that add depth to the film’s narrative. Morrison, in particular, brings a sense of menace and intensity to his role as the ruthless gangster Frank.

Sons of Summer isn’t without its flaws, however. The film’s tone can be inconsistent at times, veering wildly from sentimental surfer-bro moments to intense action sequences. But despite its shortcomings, Sons of Summer remains an enjoyable watch, perfect for a lazy summer afternoon.

Ultimately, Sons of Summer is a film that will appeal to fans of surfing and action alike. While it may not be a game-changer in the world of cinema, it’s a fun, mindless romp that’s guaranteed to leave you feeling entertained and perhaps even inspired to catch a few waves of your own.
