Abigail: A Bloody Delight
As a self-proclaimed cinephile, I’m always on the lookout for films that push the boundaries of genre and storytelling. And, oh boy, did I stumble upon a gem with Abigail! This vampire thriller is a short, sharp, and satisfying blend of horror and humor that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
The film tells the story of Abigail, a 12-year-old ballerina-loving crime boss’s daughter who’s kidnapped for a whopping $50 million ransom. But, things take a dark turn when it’s revealed that Abigail is a bloodthirsty vampire. Suddenly, the tables are turned, and the kidnappers become the prey.
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, the film is a reimagining of the 1936 Universal monster movie Dracula’s Daughter. The duo’s expertise in ramping up tension in confined spaces is on full display here, as the gang of kidnappers begin to turn on each other.
The cast, which includes Alisha Weir as Abigail, Dan Stevens as Frank, and Kevin Durand as Peter, deliver standout performances that add to the film’s charm. Weir, in particular, shines as the preteen vampire who’s seemingly toying with her captors.
One of the highlights of the film is its clever nods to vampire mythology and other vampire films. The characters’ deliberation over whether to use stakes, garlic, or crucifixes to take down Abigail is a hilarious and clever touch.
Abigail bares her fangs
Abigail is a refreshing take on the vampire genre, and its blend of horror and humor makes it a must-watch for fans of the genre. So, if you’re looking for a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat, look no further.
